Great Bishop's Graduates: Dr. Maude Abbott, 1894

Edward Grynfeltt

Maude Abbott (1868-1940) was one of Canada's first female doctors. Raised in the small Quebec town of Saint Andrews East by her maternal grandmother, alongside her younger sister, she was determined to become a doctor. When McGill refused her entry to their medical school, she appealed to Bishop's, which changed their admissions policy to accommodate her. After graduating from Bishop's Medical School in 1894, Abbott would go on to become one of the greatest cardiologists in the world.
