A dedicated film photography enthusiast since childhood, Mario Janelle began experimenting early on with natural light, framing, and their emotional resonance. Taken under the wing of an uncle who was a museologist, he absorbed a myriad of influences, from the great masters of photography and visual arts to landmark filmmakers. As a passionate young street photographer, his craft naturally drew him toward the seventh art.

After studying film at university, he dedicated himself to cinematography, working in both documentary and fiction. Drawn to international projects, he regularly travels to the most remote corners of the globe—including polar regions—tirelessly seeking out compelling subjects. His camera work has contributed to numerous feature films, including Chaakapesh, Silk (Soie), Upside Down, Winnie, and The Song of Names.

With Un Soir d’Équinoxe, he makes his debut as a writer-director, delivering a personal story adapted from a real-life tragedy experienced by people who crossed his path.
