1941. The world is radically different from the one described by usual history. Napoleon V reigns over France, where, as everywhere else on the globe, scientists have been mysteriously disappearing for the past 70 years, depriving mankind of vital inventions. Ignorant of radio, television, electricity, aviation and the internal combustion engine, this universe is mired in outdated technology, as if asleep in a 19th-century knowledge base ruled by coal and steam.

It is in this strange world that a young girl, Avril, sets off in search of her parents, scientists who have disappeared, in the company of Darwin, her talking cat, and Julius, a young street rascal. This trio will have to face the dangers and mysteries of this rigged world. Who has been kidnapping scientists for decades? For what sinister purpose?
