Margaret Humphreys (en) was a Nottingham social worker who discovered and exposed the Home Children scandal, a government program designed to send thousands of poor British children to Commonwealth countries such as Australia and Canada. These deported children, promised “oranges and sunshine”, were instead condemned to back-breaking work and a hard life in institutions such as Keaney College in Bindoon, Western Australia.
